Why are You Giving Me This?

September 25, 2022

Sunday, September 25, 2022.
Temperature: 71 degrees.
This day, God gave us the privilege of serving 53 people.

Maryann

Maryann is our friend and one of the oldest homeless people we’ve met. She is a mother figure to many of the homeless. Maryann picks wild flowers at the city parks and offers them for sale at $2.00 a bundle. She consistently looks after those who are sick and mentally and emotionally challenged. She told us, “It can be dangerous out here.” Tearing up, Maryann went on to tell us that all her belongings had recently been stolen. As she walked away crying, she said, “I don’t know why some people have to be so mean.” Calling her back, we said, “Maryann, we have a special gift for you.” Then we handed her a crucifix. Hugging the cross to her heart, she smiled through her tears and said, “I’ve been wanting one of these for a long time.”

Sean

We left the downtown area and headed to the northeast side of the city. Passing Calvary cemetery, we decided to stop by my mother’s grave to say a prayer. As we drove through the gate, we saw a homeless man carrying several bags with all his belongings. His hands were covered with dirt. Pulling over we asked if he could use some help. “I can use all the help I can get,” he replied. We introduced ourselves and he told us, “My name is Sean. I’ve been digging through a dumping area looking for cans and bottles to cash.” We extended our gifts of cash, a Dunkin Donuts certificate and a prayer card. He said, “Wow, I’m going to Dunkin right now to get a sandwich.” We asked if he could use some water and fruit. He gladly accepted and we gave him a bag of personal items. At the sight of toilet paper, Sean lit up and said, “I really need all this stuff. I can’t thank you enough.” Overwhelmed with gratitude, Sean told us, “When there isn’t any room at the Shelter, I sleep here because it’s safe. Not many people come into a cemetery at night.”
