“What has happened to it all? Crazy some’d say, where is the life that I recognized? (Gone away) Lyrics from “Ordinary World” by Duran Duran

November 30, 2024

Today, we had the privilege of serving 25 people.

  • We ran into our friends (Annie, Tim).  Annie spoke about how cold it was the night before.  She couldn’t sleep in the tent.  We were talking about the ordinance that the mayor did not sign to arrest and fine our friends for camping outside or loitering.
  • Some of our friends were not out because of the cold.  We found it strange when we did talk to our friends when they asked how our Thanksgiving was?  We felt it was uneasy to ask how theirs was.  I know a few of the local churches (L Street) served a Thanksgiving meal.  The news always shows the politicians serving meals this time of year -- just another photo opportunity -- but there are people serving the less fortunate on a regular basis.
  • We ran into our friends (Shane, Kathy) who had their clothes stolen.  We were able to replace a lot of the clothing they were missing along with providing our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card, Oreos, Gatorade, hand sanitizer.  We spoke with them again about going into treatment.  We have this discussion every week and it usually ends with me saying “If you don’t do something, you are going to die out here”.  I tell them I love them; God loves them.  They keep losing my cell phone number, so I took off (Kathy’s) baseball hat and write it under the brim.
  • We met up with our friend (Bosch) and a new friend (Tom).  Claire took Bosch’s hand and remarked how cold it was.  I think our friends sometimes become numb to the cold and to life in general.  People will comment, “well it’s their decision to live the way they live”.  Anybody that knows anything about addiction knows the disease will bring you to a living hell.  The wind will blow through the hole in your soul, taking everything near and dear to you.  And just when you think it can’t take any more, it will.

God Bless,
