“I am the good shepherd, and I lay down my life for my sheep says the Lord”. John 10:11
“Seems to me you live your life like a candle in the wind, never knowing who to turn to when the rain sets in”, lyrics from the song “Candle in the Wind” by Elton John
We had the privilege of serving 20 people today.
- We met up with our friends Jay, Annie, Tim. We missed them last week. They explained they have had to keep moving their tent after being evicted from different spots. They each had the look of frustration by having to keep moving. Without preaching, we explained “you don’t have to live like this”. I mentioned that a time will come when the Grace of God will enter their lives and they will make a decision to make a change. We pray this will happen. I read somewhere recently, “Grace is when God gives us something we don’t deserve. Mercy is when God spares us from something we do deserve”.
- We met a new friend, Rob who is a union tradesman. He explained he was new to the street. In talking to him he explained he had spent through his annuity and made bad choices, landing him where he sat in this doorway on Main St. As we talked, I was touched by his belief that God really does love him. We gave him our packet of $10 bill/$10 DK card/prayer card.
- Another new friend, Tommy, an Air Force veteran. We offered him our packet and he politely refused and said we should give it to someone who really needs. There are still people who put other people’s needs ahead of their own. This is the true image of Christ. When we left him he said “God bless you” and we said “No…God bless you!”
- At our last two stops we got talking to John, Pat and Sue. John and I started talking about Jim. Most people, when the subject of Jim comes up, their eyes well up. He made such a lasting impression not only on me, but all his friends on the street. There was only one Jim Orcutt. I remember talking to Jim after Fr. Joe Callahan died and I said, “there will never be be another Joe Callahan”. Jim quickly corrected me and said, “we can never think this way”. Jim still guides me as I write these summaries. I feel he moves my pencil.
“But with God all things are possible”. Matthew 19:26
God bless,
