Gospel MK 6:53-56
After making the crossing to the other side of the sea,
Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret
and tied up there.
As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him.
They scurried about the surrounding country
and began to bring in the sick on mats
to wherever they heard he was.
Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered,
they laid the sick in the marketplaces
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak;
and as many as touched it were healed.
Reflection:
Two thousand years ago....."people immediately recognized him.....wherever they heard he was.....that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak....."
Not much has changed since the days Jesus walked the earth; we are all still looking to be reassured, comforted, and healed.
We go to our doctor, our clinic, our therapist....seeking to be cured.
But, when human touch fails, we look for the nearest steeple....in the hope that we "might touch only the tassel of his cloak."
As in the time of Jesus, we seek the touch of God as children seek the comforting touch of their mother in times of trouble.
And like a mother, God is always there....so that we may lay our head upon her lap and know that all is well because we are loved.
Only in the knowledge of God's love "hope springs eternal."
Like children, we instinctively know when in trouble, run to the One who loves us.
"Call on me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
Psalm 50:15
