Gospel MK 8:11-13
The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with Jesus,
seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.
He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said,
“Why does this generation seek a sign?
Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
Then he left them, got into the boat again,
and went off to the other shore.
Reflection:
"The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with Jesus,
seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him."
It's tempting to find fault with the Pharisees but far more productive to indulge in honest, self-examination. Truthfully, there have been times when I have been very much like the Pharisees: I too have entered into discussions more prepared to defend my position than to listen with an open mind.
"There are none so blind as those who cannot see." -John Heywood
He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said,
“Why does this generation seek a sign?"
The Pharisee wanted Jesus to give them a sign, proof that He was sent by God. But, Jesus came looking for those who would follow Him in faith.
"Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
Then he left them, got into the boat again,
and went off to the other shore.
Jesus does not try to argue His point or convince us to believe in Him; He knows that He cannot enter through a closed door.
When confronted with doubt and hostility, He shakes off the dust of disbelief and moves on to those who have ears to listen.
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in......." Revelation 3:20
